Understanding Chapter 3 How Many Squares
Area
The area of a shape is the amount of space it takes up or covers. It is measured in square units, i.e. Sq cm or sq m.
Example, the area of a square with side length 6 units is 6 x 6 = 36 square units.
To find the area of a shape, we can use the formula:
Area = length x breadth
Where length is the measurement of one side of the shape and breadth is the measurement of the other side of the shape. For square all sides are equal (Area = 2 x length) and for rectangle opposite sides are equal (Area = length x breadth).
Perimeter
The perimeter of a shape is the total length of all its sides. It is measured in units. For example, the perimeter of a square with side length 4 units is 4 x 4 = 16 units.
To find the perimeter of a shape, we can use the formula:
Perimeter = sum of all side lengths
Moreover, students can use units squares to find the area and perimeter of irregular shapes like oval swimming pool, footprints, area of leaf, etc.

Some examples of repetitive patterns are:
- A chessboard pattern is made up of squares that are alternately black and white.
- A brick pattern is made up of rectangles that are stacked on top of each other.
- A stripe pattern is made up of lines that are of equal width and are spaced evenly apart.
