  1. Matter is made up of particles

    Matter is not continuous but made of very small particles called constituent particles.
    These particles are too small to be seen with a simple microscope.
    Examples: Grinding chalk → chalk powder → still chalk; Dissolving sugar → spreads into water particles.

    • Very small in size.
    • Have spaces between them (interparticle space).
    • Held together by interparticle forces of attraction.
    • Particles are always in motion.

    • Heat increases particle motion.
    • Solids melt at melting point.

    • Evaporation occurs at all temperatures.
